SaxBecause of recent situation my playing thesax time is increasing. As I play I get disappointed at my fingers that don’tmove the way I want them to. Cannot catch up with the tempo, cannotdecide which lead to use.Such a difficult things, but Hiro and JeffSheets are playing easily and also happily. Not the same musical instrument, but I respect them from my heart. And I’m jealous.I have had a complex about music from mychildhood.I finally got my first Tenor Sax at the ageof 60. Joy of hearing the very first sound from mysax with my heart beating. Excitement of learning the musical scale and playingmy sax as the musical score says. These are all what I wanted. But step by stepI realized my sound poor and ugly. That caused me pain and I felt miserable.Persons who understand music by their soultell me “Anyway enjoy it”. There is a big gap between my ideal soundand my real sound. I suffer from it. I am about to scream, “How can I enjoyit!” Even so, sometimes there are some moments Ifeel “Wasn’t that sound good?”, “Oh my fingers move smoothly!”Right when like that no one is listening tothe sound. Why? Because of Coronavirus? No. Anyone is scarcely beside me at therare bliss moment. So I will play a little more by myself, with worry. Saxophone, glittering and withering. When I teach I’ll be nice from now on.I want to play at will like disc dog.
Still about USDDNIn 2008 we moved the World Finals fromLouisville in Kentucky to Cartersville in Georgia. Then USDDN grew up everyyear and become very important one in the Disc Dog world. May be the stableclimate in Cartersville and the USDDN rules widely spread also helped thegrowth.Melissa Heeter achieved the success andof course I know there are untiring efforts of Laura O’Neil who took over it from Melissa. Also we cannot forget aboutmembers of GAD&DC in charge of the management. This year the World Finals will be heldat Ottawa Canada. I worry a little about American player’s transfer or difficulty of running such a big event in new place. But when I think about not only Pat Nadarajah but also reliable staff members,I can say “Surely we can do it!” Let’s go for it! We will help anything we can.By the way they already announcedofficially that next year the World Finals will be held in Poland.Congratulations Poland. Congratulations Europe.USDDN is about to make new start. If wecan have another 3 to 5 years future vision of USDDN Japanese and other Asiandisc dog countries can make the future plans.Go for it USDDN!

Go!USDDN!! Go for it !!!!

Welcome to my first seminar in United States!!
I have held “Yachi’s Method Disc Dog seminar” in Europe, China, South America, Japan, and Canada many times. And this time, it’s a great honor to be able to give you the seminar in USA which is a home country of disc dog in a sense. I really appreciate for you coming to this important seminar today.
To tell the truth, almost everything what I am going to tell you today is what I've learned from great players in United States for these 15 years.
You know Todd Duncan, I learned sportsmanship from him. May be you don’t remember, but Todd always runs out to pick up discs on the field after his rival players finished their routine. And I learned wonderful dog catch and smile from Tracy Custer.
Also, I learned importance of ideal back hand throw from Chuck Middleton, and what is the disc management from Steven Heeter, how cool is jumping shoulder throw from Ron Watson.
Pam Martin taught me happiness that this sport can give others and so many dog training skills.
And, Melissa Heeter taught me field presentation which we Japanese think a great deal of, and principle of disc dog freestyle sport.
You know I live in Japan which has really different culture from USA, and I have watched this sport in USA objectively for many years. In this seminar, I am going to talk about all I got in these years from USA and the basic policy in my own way.
First of all, I want to tell you about very simple thing that this sport consists of three elements, player, dog and disc. We have to show these three elements on a field well-balanced. For example, even if a player showed a great systematic move or dancing move like Michael Jackson’s, the routine in which audience cannot remember how the dog was, is not good play at all.
For example.
On the other hand, even if a player showed awesome throwing skill in a routine, it is worthless if no relationship between dog and player can be seen.
This is to say, we have to showcase to the others how player and dog are enjoying this sport using discs well-balanced. And this is how disc dog free style sport should be.
USDDN rules are made up to give fair evaluation to the teams which can show these three elements in good balance. Such way of thinking is not only in disc dog. Other free style sports like figure skating or snowboarding have rules that players can not win if they cannot represent various elements in a good balance. We Japanese players always ask ourselves if our routine have these three elements in a good balance.
The next thing we think important is, not using one trick twice in a routine. For example, Shaun Hirai who won USDDN National Final three times in a row has never used same throw or same trick twice in his routine. This idea is necessary in order to show as many things as possible in good balance in limited 120 seconds.
For example.
I always tell others especially my sons and their friends,
“You are competing with rivals in front of you, but not only with them. Your rivals are also in dog sledding, agility, and flyball world. All other dog sports players are your rivals, too. So you should play proudly as a player for disc dog world championship!”
Q)
You are from the Northern Japan , there is a lot of snow , this make you start your mushing carrer, isn't it right?
Yachi)
Right. My first imagination of Dog Sports was mushing.
After I got Siberians Huskies, I trained them by skate board.
And learned many things from them.
Q)
The musher career is very expensive expecially if you from the Japan go to Alaska for a competition. If I'm not mistaken in the 2006 you went to Fairbanks, Alaska .How it was?
Yachi)
Yes, it was so expensive. I spent more than $40000 for that travel.
・・・・・
It was miserable travel for me.
When I was racing in 6dog class, I could keep my team Top10 in Alaska USA.
8dog class also.
I thought my team could be Top10 easily in Open class.
But Open class was totaly different.
After 2years hard training in Japan, I could not find any injured dog in my 22dogs team.
Then I chose best 14 dogs for Open North American Championship .
(One of the best world title)
I arrived at Alaska with them after 8days hard travel.
I started train them again.
It happened from the first training.
Every time I finished the training, I found one or two limping dogs.
Trail in Alaska was so hard and tough for my Japanese dogs.
I could find only 7 fine dogs in my team, I almost gave up before the race.
So I don't think to tell about my miserable experience in Last Alaska. Hahaha.
(But I always think about "revenge". Some day, before I am dead I will build up new team and race with them.)
Q)
Tell me a little bit about your start in discdog.
What has fascinated you in discdog at the biginning?
Yachi)
I used to be a freestyle skateboarder when I was young.
I skated everyday. Every night and day.
Freestyle skateboarding is skate on the flat land with music.
One day, I went to movie theater and watched a movie of American new sports.
There was a black&white dog catching Frisbee in the air.
I felt this is the sports just for me. I can do it.
But I could not find any information about that sports.
15 years later, I started frisbee dog sports.
I was 37years old already.
Q)
Do you remember your first competition?
Yachi)
I remember I was nervous and my fingers were trembled.
Q)
After many years of presence at major competitions.
What was the competition that remained most in the heart ?
Yachi)
Every single competition was important for me.
Q)
How is growing the Japanese disc dog scene...Or how has grown the scene after your first competition until today?
Yachi)
Before USDDN Finals we could not participate World Finals in USA.
The reason why we were not American citizens.
I participated some local World finals, but it was not good enough for Japanese.
There were no rule we felt. We asked about rules but no answer at that time.
Only USDDN had the answers.
And they opened the door for not American players.
Now we have rules that same as USDDN.
It made Japanese players so good.
Because we have no doubt about the rules.
This is most important for Freestyle sports.
There are so many great teams in competition of Japan.
Q)Someone said that you don't win with luck but with the skills. At most you can have bad luck and can't prove what you have learned with your dogs. What do you think?
Luck can play an important role in competitions or not ?
Yachi)
Maybe good person get good luck. I am not. Hahaha.
Q)
How do you feel when you see someone win a competition using to the advice you gave him ?
Yachi)
I am proud of it.
Q)
What do you think: Which major differences you see between the discdog in Europe ,Japan and in the USA?
Yachi)
European have a lot of skills. Only they need is the experience of tough competitions.
I think 10 very good team in Europe.
There are so many good players in USA. But most of them do not compete any more. They just do Demo for .....
We don't have to think about them. Just wait for them to come back on the field.
Just 10 very good teams in competition field. 10 more very good teams in Demo field in USA. And 10 more retired very good players.
15very good teams in Japan.
Especially their smooth transition is different from the other countries.
Q)
Seen you're coming from Japan I need to do this question. For Sharpening techniques in discdog you draw inspiration or use some martial arts techniques?
Yachi)
Maybe yes.
Q)
What is your vision (the future) of this sport in Japan?
My own?
I will make Dog Sports School for world young generation.
What do you think?
I like to teach young people so much.
Q)
Can you give our readers some tips that they should remember when training their dog?
Yachi)
Your dog has its own good point. Look for it. Polish it. Keep on playing this sports.
Q)
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview! Do you have anything else you would like to add?
Yachi)
Melissa Heeter.
I am 56 years old very experienced person in this sports..
I can say she is the person we can trust.
Thanks a lot.
